What a Military Promotion Is Actually Worth in Dollars

“How much is the promotion worth?” has no single answer, because a promotion doesn't hand you a percentage — it moves you to a different row of the pay table while your years-of-service column keeps advancing on its own clock. The distance between rows varies enormously by grade and by when you pin on. Here is the actual math, computed from the 2026 DFAS table.

The mechanics: new row, same column

Basic pay is a grid: grade down the side, years of service across the top. Promotion changes your row and nothing else — you keep your years-of-service column, and you keep crossing longevity marks on schedule. So the promotion's value is simply the gap between two rows at your current column, and that gap is different at every column.

What the 2026 table pays for common promotions

1. E-4 → E-5 at 4 years: +$288/month — $3,456.00 a year.
2. E-5 → E-6 at 8 years: +$312/month.
3. E-6 → E-7 at 12 years: +$548/month — one of the biggest enlisted jumps in the table.
4. O-1 → O-2 at 2 years: +$1,126/month — junior officer promotions are the steepest in percentage terms.
5. O-3 → O-4 at 10 years: +$1,043/month.

Timing: the same promotion can pay 2.5x more

Here is the part the recruiting posters skip. An E-5 promoted to E-6 at the 6-year mark gains +$126 per month. The same promotion at the 8-year mark gains +$312. Nothing about the stripe changed — what changed is that the E-5 row has nearly flattened by 8 years while the E-6 row is still climbing, so the gap between the rows widens. As a general pattern, the longer you sit in a grade whose row has topped out, the more the next promotion is worth the day it arrives.

Longevity steps come anyway

Don't credit the promotion with money the calendar was going to pay you regardless. Crossing a years-of-service mark raises pay with no promotion at all — an E-5 crossing from the over-4 to the over-6 column gains +$163/month; an E-6 crossing over-8 to over-10 gains +$148. The ripple effects: BAH and retirement

Basic pay is only the first line. BAH is also set by grade, so promotion usually raises your housing allowance too — in 2026 San Diego, E-5 to E-6 adds $240.00/month to the without-dependents rate, and that money is tax-free.
